The Fabrication of Nature

Sculptural Artist Michaella Janse van Vuuren

Merging the inorganic with the organic, Michaella brings nature to technology through the use of 3D printing.
Michaella Janse van Vuuren, a designer and artist with a PhD in Electrical Engineering focuses her design for 3D printing or additive manufacturing, creating sculptures that are technically complex and artistically competent.

The Chrysanthemum centrepiece one amongst many of Michaella's pieces that undergo an extreme and highly intense design process before even being considered taking it to a 3D programme. The Chrysanthemum centrepiece was voted as the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa at the Design Indaba Expo 2009

The Chrysanthemum centre piece nature inspired is through the texture, shape and pattern used in creating it. This multifunctional design can either be used as a candle holder or a bowl depending on which design faces upwards.
The Chrysanthemum is directly manufactured with the EOS P380 using the PA2200 polyamide material, Michaella states without the use of selective laser sintering (SLS)  creating this piece by hand would of been next to impossible. Although machine made the Chrysanthemum still retains the beauty and tactile feeling of the natural object.
